Every Shalalala: Reminiscing The Carpenters

Yeah, long time no read. Just a bit busy with the wedding and all.Yes, guys, I am going there. Finally!

I just heard my dad play those classic songs again and it hit me: I haven't paid tribute to one of my favorite singers yet! My parents "discovered" that I could sing when I was in primary school and from then on, they bought a lot of multiplex tapes (Google, my dear young friend, Google.) to let me "rehearse" my "pieces". One of my influences was, is and will forever be Karen Carpenter. Though she left us all too soon, her voice was very soothing and distinct.

So, here's some of the Carpenters' songs that might not have been overly commercialized but has meant a lot to me and maybe to a lot of die-hard hopeless romantics like me. :)

MUMOMOMENT HIT #5 FOR ALL WE KNOW

For All We Know was actually written for the movie Lovers and Other Strangers in 1970. It was written by famous musical scorers during that time (Fred Karlin, Robb Royer and Jimmy Griffin and was originally performed by Larry Meredith.

FAVE LINES: We've got a lifetime to share | So much to say |  And as we go from day to day

KAREN FACT: Karen Carpenter loved playing the drums. She was even praised by fellow drummers at that time. Proof? Listen to the Carpenters' album Ticket To Ride.

MUMOMOMENT HIT #4 GOODBYE TO LOVE

This song was composed by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis released in 1972. This is the one of the first few who used the fuzz guitar. This was my theme song when I was preparing myself for the spinster life. Hehehe!

FAVE LINES: All the years of useless search have finally reached an end | Loneliness and empty days will be my only friend | From this day love is forgotten I'll go on as best I can

KAREN FACT: She was just 32 when she passed away due to, we all know, anorexia nervosa. This led to a number of celebrities being open about their eating disorders. Her family founded the Karen A. Carpenter Memorial Foundation which was changed to the Carpenter Family Foundation. Aside from raising funds for people with eating disorders, the foundation also finances the arts, entertainment and education.

MUMOMOMENT HIT #3 MAKE BELIEVE IT'S YOUR FIRST TIME

Written by Bob Morrison and Johnny Wilson, Karen recorded Make Believe It's Your First Time intended for her solo album which was eventually shelved and was posthumously released in a very far away era named 1996 under the album Karen Carpenter.

FAVE LINES: This moment's ours | Tonight's the night | And if we fall in love | Well, that's alright

KAREN FACT: Cynthia Gibb played as Karen in the made-for-TV movie The Karen Carpenter Show on January 1, 1989. She lip-synced the songs to Karen's recorded voice except for the song The End of the World.

MUMOMOMENT HIT #2 MERRY CHRISTMAS, DARLING

Yes, I know you are expecting that I would start with "Since Christmas is just around the corner, yadda yadda, Yoda...". Sorry. 

Since Christmas is just around the corner (sly me), I added up one of the most popular Carpenters' songs from the album Christmas Portrait. This was written by Richard Carpenter and Frank Pooler originally recorded in 1970. 

FAVE LINES: Merry Christmas, darling | We're apart, that's true | But I can dream | And in my dreams | I'm Christmasing with you

KAREN FACT: Karen's musical inclination started when she was already in 1st year high school. She played the glockenspiel and was later interested with the drums, thanks to Frankie Chavez. She practiced with the use of a pair of chopsticks and a set of bar stools.

MUMOMOMENT HIT #1 ONE LOVE

 

Now, I would really go cheesy on this. This is my secret love song to my first crush who's now my fiance. You know, those days when you just stare at something and start daydreaming.

It was written by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis in 1971 for the album Carpenters. Sounds like a filler to me.

Campaign Jingle Suggestions (Isip Pilipinas)

Hi there!

I was thinking of giving you the top graduation songs but the people I asked seem to find the idea boring or lame... or lame and boring. And everyone knows that Through The Years and Farewell are number 1 so there is no more anticipation factor to it. It was tough to think of themes for Mumomoment but that's the whole point, right? :) 

And so I was commuting one day and I heard a jingle that sounded like Psy's Gangnam Style. I know that the artist made it clear that his song plus the horse dance are not allowed to be used for the election campaigns. Therefore: 

DO NOT ELECT LAWBREAKERS!!!

Who is he? He never won the posts he was aiming for. He ran for mayor several times but he failed and now I believe he is running for the board member post. If you're from Calamba City, you know this guy very well. *insert evil laughter*

Because of this, I was inspired to write this blog to give Filipino politicians an idea of what the people want to hear, ya know, yung hip and madaling makabola ng tao.

MUMOMOMENT HIT# 3 SINGLE LADIES by BEYONCE

This is one great song that can catch the interest of the female voters, which is very strong in number in this country. The politician just needs to be very creative and imaginative... and gutsy.

CAMPAIGN JINGLE LINES: You can change the lyrics to "If you like him/her, then you should've put him/her on Senate/Congress" or whatever. Then enters Sexbomb Dancers or G-Force, if the budget permits.

TRAPO TRIVIA: Joseph Ejercito Estrada and the incumbent mayor Alfredo Lim have been throwing daggers and bombs to each other these past few weeks. Just how big is Manila? Well, if Erap wins, he'd be able to get back on his feet and acquire more wives. That's how "investment-friendly" Manila is, that's why the place is always considered a "hot spot" during campaign season. Funny that the Lim-Estrada debate on TV (Click me to watch the debate on Youtube) has been so sensational that the Manilenos are now confused. ISIP, MAYNILA!

MUMOMOMENT HIT# 2 SABAY-SABAY TAYO by MARIAN RIVERA

This song composed by Geleen Eugenio can also be used as a campaign jingle because of its makamasa factor. This appeals to every Filipino who is glued on TV and is very much well-versed with Pinoy showbiz than Philippine history.

CAMPAIGN JINGLE LINES: Kay [insert 3-syllable name] tayo | siya'y ating iboto then enters Marian Rivera, again, if the budget permits. Oh, there's a "hireable" Kalokalike!

TRAPO TRIVIA: Benigno "PNoy/Noynoy" Simeon Cojuangco Aquino III will be alone no more IF nephew Benigno Simeon "Bam" Aquino IV and Tita Margarita "Ting-Ting" Cojuangco will make it to the senate. The rest of the clan is also busy building the "empire". For instance, incumbent 1st District Congressman Enrique Cojuangco is running unopposed for the same seat. There are rumors that the very sweet youngest presidential sister is going to run for Senate in 2016... Do I hear Kris Aquino for President?

MUMOMOMENT HIT# 1 BEER by ITCHYWORMS

The most important people to persuade are the ones who love drinking so why not use a jingle that could promote your name and beer at the same time? Hahaha!

CAMPAIGN JINGLE LINES: The politician needs to get a great singer or the band itself to get through this. The lines can be like this: Iboto n'yo si [insert 1-syllable name or just say it quickly] sa darating na halalaaaaaaaaan | Upang malunod na ang puso n'yo sa kaligayahaaaaaaaan | Bawat botong bigay ninyo | Ay sooooobrang gusto-gusto ko | 'Yong iboto para sa [insert position that must end with an o]

TRAPO FACTS: According to news, COMELEC is facing credibility issues. According to what I see everyday, they really are facing credibility issues -- getting worse on a daily basis. I think they need fangs if they are going to roll out their projects for the May 2013 elections. Technology equals trouble. Purple/ Blue nails, however dirty they may be, are still proof of voting. Trees are still used for posters. Nuisance candidates were allowed to run. TV plugs and billboards are over the limit. Bashing is allowed on newspapers -- usually gets a one-pager. This is going to be bloody.

Lyndon Gregorio's Vumivideoke Hits

Yey! It's Graduation Month! 

We are dedicating all the March blogs to the graduates of 2013 who still believe that education is the key to success (I thank you *tsunami walk while waving to the audience). Kudos to the parents and guardians as well because they are also graduating from spending (slow clap).

I actually sent a message to a few people requesting for their Mumomoment Hits and Lyndon was the first to reply (thanks to blastbm.multiply.com for the picture I just grabbed in Google).

I am a comic book fan since I was a kid and I thank my ex-boyfriend for introducing Beerkada to me. I am a very frustrated artist and I really envy people like Lyndon who were given the talent to just sit there, think of fun and pun, and ink it. How amazing, right? 

It seems that comic art is kind of a "dead" industry in our country but thanks to a lot of otakus whose passion inspire a lot of our artists. Hello? We're like super talented! Like I'm talking about globally-demanded talent. Duh?

Back to the list before I make gigil pa. The list contains songs Filipino videoke addicts love singing kesehodang hindi nila abot ang tono at hatinggabi na. Put ya hands up in the air yo! We are all guilty about it, most especially with call center friends who love "team buildings" (Team Building = One Team + Booze + Videoke!). Ang saya saya!

A-Ha was a Norwegian pop band formed when I was born (very youthful). The band was considered a one-hit wonder because of this song.

a-ha FACTS: The three members of the band were appointed Knights of the 1st Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav for their contribution to Norwegian music. The Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav is granted as a reward for distinguished services to their country and mankind.

Their final concert entitled Ending On A High Note was a tour in Europe, USA, Canada, South America, Japan and Russia. The last shows were in Oslo.

MUMOMOMENT HIT# 2 THROUGH THE FIRE by CHAKA KHAN

The artist's name is actually a gay word for a not-so-pretty person/ situation but given Chaka's talent, she is more than gorgeous.

CHAKA KHAN FACTS: Chaka Khan is considered to be the Queen of Funk-Soul. Her real name is Yvette Marie Stevens. 

The ten-time Grammy Award winning American singer- songwriter is a vegan, saying she adopted the diet to lose weight and combat high blood pressure and Type-2 diabetes. In the past, Chaka struggled with drug abuse and alcoholism. Her drug use, which at times included cocaine and heroin, ended sometime in the early 90s. She would have an on-and-off combat with alcoholism until 2005 when she declared herself sober.

Ana on making music in the 80s: In the 1980s [making music] became uncomfortable. Music became less understandable in the wake of the new MTV era. You weren't supposed to be anything other than a pop star, to not go deeper than that. It was really strange. It was suffocating, image-wise. What you could talk about in a song changed; if you were misunderstood, you were really misunderstood -- taken literally. Aiko's 10 Fun Songs

It's just great to know that I am related to a lot of people born on the love month. As promised, here's our 3rd installment with yet another celebrator's list.

These songs are from a lovely, young lady that happens to be a huge fan of fun. and other not-so-mainstream, not-yet-noticed-by-the-judgmental-society musicians. She worries that her infatuation might end up once an artist or a band becomes too popular. Yes, Brandon Boyd was number 1 on my "Marriable" Rockstars List in college. Well, during my time, he's like the hottest human ever created by the good Lord up above. However, due to his physical situation, he was replaced by Daniel Padilla. Oh, he's not a rockstar? Okay, let's put Brandon back then... :)

A very tricky question. Everyone can relate to this. We lie when we were 17, right? LOL!

TRAVIS FACTS: They are from Glasgow in Scotland categorized as post-Britpop. The band almost called it quits when their drummer Neil Primrose broke his neck after he jumped head-first into a shallow pool while they were on tour in France. He almost died due to spinal damage. But this incident made the band "regroup and re-evaluate", thus producing more depth into their musicality.

It became one of our LSS since its release to the Philippine pop public. The music video was much anticipated, too, as it showed P!nk's hot husband, Carey Hart.

P!NK FACTS: Pink has been described as an artist who has changed the scope of pop music, but has hardly received recognition for it. But this fact never stopped her from making great music. Her well-recognized powerful vocals become greater when she stopped smoking. 

About her fashion sense, P!nk told In Style: "I'm eclectic. I'm a tomboy, but I'm kind of a hippie and kind of a gangster... I don't know if that's a good thing, but it is my thing." She is almost a vegan, though she eats chicken and fish occasionally.

We first featured fun. last year (see Gaget's Happy 10) and a lot of changes had taken place since. Well, they just won 2 Grammy's and got nominated to a few more categories, just those. Big leap for an indie pop band? Not really. YES, REALLY!!!

FUN. FACTS: fun. won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist and the Grammy Award for Song of the Year for We Are Young. I guess their old band, The Format's breakup was a blessing in disguise after all. They are selling records and touring the world.

She loves inspirational songs, mostly gospel. She knows how to play almost all of the instruments used in the music ministry. I just felt like saying. I am impressed with Laura. She knows that voice can make her rake millions of fans, dollars, endorsements and awards. She didn't go mainstream because of the passion to share the music to the quiet Christian community. Just as I have thought, this blog is going to be very serious.

LAURA HACKETT FACTS: She wrote her first song when she was 8. She later attended the Conservatory of Music and Dance at the University of Missouri in Kansas City and graduated with a degree in Music Theory. She teaches voice classes and serves as a worship leader at IHOP.

Girl is a Czech singer- songwriter and musician who later became an actress, thanks to the movie Once in which they won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2007. She is the other half of the duo The Swell Season.

She met him in 2001 when she was just 13. Her father organized a music fest in the Czech Republic and booked The Frames. Their romantic relationship began during the making of the movie and ended in 2009.

BROOKE FRASER FACTS: She is from New Zealand well known as a folk-pop and Christian recording artist. She is actually married to Scott Ligertwood in Sydney. She writes for Hillsong Church under the name Brooke Ligertwood but uses her stage name as a recording artist for Sony BMG.

I know my bestfriend is really cheesy and all but I didn't know he is that cheesy. I've got to admit, this one nails it all. :)

THE SCRIPT FACTS: Amidst autotune and live singing issues, I still find this band an amazing one because of their poetry. You can definitely feel the soul of their music through their lyrics.

Mark on their new album #3: "I haven’t played it for anybody and I need a minute with that song. I can’t even tell you if it is a good song or not. It’s a page from my diary, I produced and wrote it but I have to walk away from it. It is just a weird one. It is a touchy subject for me – I lost both my parents quite young and it was a real dark point in my life. Like Danny said, it is something I have never talked about until now. I don’t know if we will ever find the right moment to play that live at all. I can’t even picture playing it live because it is so personal."

Russian president Dmitry Medvedev is a big fan of Deep Purple. He has all albums of the band.

SNOW PATROL FACTS: Snow Patrol’s debut album Songs For Polarbears was a critical success but a commercial flop. The single Chasing Cars, taken from the album Eyes Open, was a massive hit both in the UK and the US. It was used in the season finale of US medical show Grey’s Anatomy and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.

COLDPLAY FACTS: The band wrote Yellow and co-produced it with British record producer Ken Nelson for their debut album, Parachutes (2000). The song's lyrics are a reference to band vocalist Chris Martin's unrequited love. Oh, that's why Mo Twister loves this band!

MUMOMOMENT HIT# 2 LIKE A STONE by AUDIOSLAVE

I was not a big fan of Audioslave but if I were to marry someone, it's either Brandon Boyd or Chris Cornell. <3

AUDIOSLAVE FACTS: Critics initially described Audioslave as an amalgamation of Soundgarden and Rage Against The Machine, but by the band's second album, Out of Exile, it was noted that they had established a separate identity. Audioslave disbanded in February 2007 when Cornell issued  a statement announcing that he was permanently leaving the band "due to irresolvable personality conflicts as well as musical differences."

Oh well...

I missed blogging a lot. Like really. Thanks to PLDT DSL for making paasa.

Since I won't be around much, Mumomoment will be not much "fed" but I promise I will be back... when I am not too lazy to blog, too.

Taking a detour on videos, here's my Top 10 List on how to deal with men. I chose writing this in Filipino to add Filipino humor but translations are available at $2.50 per word. LOL!


Hindi ako eksperto sa pagkakaroon ng jowa. In fact, single ako. Ang huling naging seryoso kong relasyon ay sa isang banyaga. Nakipag-break siya sa 'kin nung Valentine's Day ng 2010. Pero tingnan nyo, mga ateng, buhay pa ako. Magkaibigan pa rin naman kami at hindi ko pinagsisisihan ang aming naging ugnayan.

Marami akong natutunan sa kanya at sa iba ko pang mga naging relasyon bago siya. At nais kong ibahagi ang ilan sa inyo. Ako ay masusing nag-imbestiga at nag-aral ukol sa ugali ng mga lalaki. But, again, hindi ako eksperto. Kung feeling mo eh mas marami kang alam, eh di sumulat ka ng sarili mong blog at itigil mo na ang pagbabasa nito.

Hindi natin sila mauunawaan ng lubos, gaya ng kalituhan nila sa kaartehan natin ngunit sa sampung paraan, maiiwasan ang mas madalas na hindi pagkakaunawaan ng mga lalaki at babae.

PAUNAWA: KUNG KOKOPYAHIN ANG LATHALANG ITO, I-ACKNOWLEDGE NYO NAMAN AKO, MGA ATENG. PINAG-ISIPAN KO ITO NG MALALIM ISANG ARAW NA AKO AY PAUWI SA AMIN SAKAY NG BUS.

10. Ayaw niya na daig mo pa ang nanay niya sa pagmomonitor kung nasaan siya, sinong kasama niya o anong ginagawa niya. Hindi ka news na dapat masagot ang 5Ws & 1H. Minsan, nagkukusa naman siya magsabi. Pero huwag asahang madalas ito maganap. Tiwa-tiwala rin.

9. Timplahin ang jokes niya. Kung mabiro siyang tao, madali lang masakyan, wala kang problema. Pero kung siya yung tipong once in a blue moon lang magbiro, bigyan siya ng complimentary "Hahaha!". Huwag mo idugtong yung "Last mo na yan". Minsan kasi ang lalaki masunurin, baka habambf or habambuhay siyang maging corny, hala ka.


8. Iparamdam mong mahal mo siya kahit hindi mo sinasabi ang mga katagang "I love you" gaya ng gusto mo. Yung simpleng bigyan mo lang siya ng chocolate kasi napangiti ka niya nung isang araw. Nakakakilig kapag siya ang nagbibigay, di ba? Pero mas nakakakilig kung siya rin napapakilig mo. 10 Ganda Points!

7. May vulnerable side din siya. Hayaan mong siya ang mag-volunteer ng past issues, pains or problems niya. Huwag siya pigain, hindi siya labada. Maging magaling na tagapakinig. Kung lahat naman ng ikukwento niya eh pagseselosan mo, swerte mo na kung umabot kayo ng 2 weeks. Tao rin siya, naiinis din.

6. Huwag mo siyang gawing ideal/ dream guy mo. Umuutot din yan. Huwag mong baguhin. E ano kung Pusong Bato ang ringtone niya? Minahal mo siya bilang siya, hindi dahil sa playlist niya.

5. Huwag piliting gustuhin ang lahat ng likes niya. That's what makes you compatible. Tandaan: Opposites attract. Kung ayaw mo sa NBA, maiintindihan niya yon. Ayaw niya rin sa Twilight so quits lang.


4. Ikaw ang magdala ng bag mo. Kaya mo ito dinala kasi andun yung mga kailangan mo. GAMIT MO YON, hindi kanya. Pero kung maleta ang dala, pwede magpatulong. Kung keri mo naman, wag mag-inarteng nahihirapan. Kung matigas ang ulo mo, e di wag ka na lang magdala ng bag! Arte pa neto.

3. Hindi siya nakakaintindi ng lenggwahe natin na ang hindi ay oo at ang ayaw eh gusto. Lalo na ring hindi siya nakakaintindi ng salitang becky. Churva, chaka, teh at keme lang ang alam niya kasi madalas niyang marinig pero di niya alam ang ibig sabihin. Huwag ipaunawa. Marami ng bakla sa mundo, gagawa ka pa ng isa?

2. Magpakatotoo ka. E ano kung malakas ka mag-burp? Kumain kayo, nabusog kayo. Mas nakakahiya namang umutot ng wagas, di ba? Mag-contest pa kayo ng palakasan, why not. Basta ang punto don, huwag kang magsinungaling o magpanggap na ibang tao ka.

At ang pinakaimportante sa lahat...

1. Huwag papipiliin kung DoTA o ikaw. Masasaktan ka lang.
